Quick to marry in Vegas, then two documents for Germany
- Valid in Germany: a Las Vegas wedding counts if it followed Nevada rules and each of you was free to marry under the law of your own country. There is no recognition procedure.
- Fast in Nevada: the marriage license costs $102, there is no waiting period and no blood test, and the license is valid for one year. You need one witness and a licensed officiant.
- The license is not the proof: German offices want the certified marriage certificate, which you order from the Clark County Clerk for $20 a copy once the officiant has filed it.
- Apostille from Carson City: the Nevada Secretary of State adds the apostille to the certified copy for $20, plus optional rush fees. Many German offices also want a German translation.
- Two traps: an earlier divorce outside the EU may first need recognition in Germany, and a video wedding before a US office while you are in Germany is not valid there.
Is a Las Vegas wedding valid in Germany?
Yes, in most cases. Germany asks two questions about any wedding abroad, and a Las Vegas wedding usually passes both.
1. Did the ceremony follow local rules? Only the rules of the place where you married count — here, Nevada’s.1 A wedding with a Clark County license, a Nevada officiant and a witness meets them.
2. Were you both free to marry? This is checked for each of you under the law of your own country.2 For a German, that means German law: no existing marriage, no close family tie. Nevada asks for no documents on this, so check it yourself before you fly. A same-sex marriage is judged by the law of the place that registered it, so it counts as a marriage in Germany too.3
Germany has no office that “recognizes” a foreign marriage. Each authority decides for itself when your marriage matters, and your certificate is the proof.4 What that means in practice is covered in detail in married abroad: is your marriage valid in Germany?
If one of you was divorced before
Nevada will not ask for your divorce papers — the Clerk only needs to see a divorce decree if it changed your name.5 Germany is stricter. A divorce granted outside the EU counts in Germany only once the justice department of a German state has recognized it. Until then, the earlier marriage still exists in German eyes, and a new one would be bigamous.6 One exception: no recognition is needed if the divorce came from the country whose only citizenship both former spouses held at the time — two US citizens divorced in the US, for example. It does apply to dual citizens. If neither of you lives in Germany, the justice department in Berlin handles the application.6 Sort this out before the wedding, not after.
Online weddings from Germany don’t count
An office in Utah, for example, has married couples by video call. If you say your vows from Germany, the marriage is not valid there. Germany’s Federal Court of Justice decided this in 2024 for a couple who married before an office in Utah while both were in Germany — even though they had a US certificate with an apostille. The court said a wedding takes place where the couple gives their consent, so German rules applied — and they require both partners to declare their consent in person before a German registrar.7 A wedding where you stand in front of the officiant in Las Vegas is not affected.

The marriage license
The license comes from the Clark County Clerk. You fill in the application online, then both of you go to the Marriage License Bureau together. No appointment is needed.8 Each of you must be at least 18, not currently married and not related closer than second cousins.5
- ID: an original photo ID — a passport works for visitors. Copies and digital IDs are not accepted.5
- Names: the license and the certificate show your names exactly as on the ID you present.5 Use the passport whose spelling you want on German records, with all first names.
- Fee: $102 as of October 2026. Card payments carry a processing fee of 2% plus $1.25; checks are not accepted.9
- Timing: no waiting period and no blood test. The license expires one year after it is issued.8
The ceremony
The ceremony must take place in Nevada and be performed by an officiant licensed in Nevada. At least one witness who is not the officiant must hear you say your vows.8 The county’s own Office of Civil Marriages charges $75 plus a $2.75 card fee, takes bookings online only and expects you to bring your own witness.10
The certificate: what German offices actually need
The license is only permission to marry. After the ceremony, the officiant completes the marriage certificate and must deliver it to the Clerk within ten days. The Clerk files it within one or two business days. Only then can you buy a certified copy — the document German offices accept as proof.11
A certified copy costs $20.9 You can order it online by card, in person, or by mail with a money order or cashier’s check in US dollars.11 Your record is only on file in the county where you got the license.12 If you order from Germany, allow time: the Clerk asks you to wait up to six weeks for international orders before reporting a missing one.12 Order at least two copies — one to send off for the apostille and one to keep.
The apostille from the Nevada Secretary of State
The US has belonged to the Hague Apostille Convention since 1981. Instead of a legalization by a German mission, the state that issued the document adds an apostille.13 The Clark County Clerk does not provide apostilles.11 For a Nevada marriage, you get it from the Nevada Secretary of State:14
- What you send: the original certified copy (photocopies are rejected), one completed order form and payment.15 The form must name the country where you will use the document — Germany — plus an email and return address.14
- Where: by mail to the office in Carson City, or in person at the drop box of the Las Vegas office.15
- Cost: $20 per apostille as of October 2026. Rush service costs extra: $75 for 24 hours, $125 for four hours, $500 for two hours, $1,000 for one hour.16
- Time: plan for about four to six weeks. That is what the office’s fee page says, and how long we waited ourselves after our own Las Vegas wedding; the main page names two weeks.14,16 Documents go back by regular mail unless you include a prepaid return envelope or ask to pick them up.14,15
What German authorities want afterwards
The German missions in the US say registry offices may ask for an apostille and a German translation of any foreign document, and that requirements vary considerably from office to office.17 Berlin’s registry offices, for example, generally want a certified German translation of foreign-language certificates.18 Call your office before you order the translation.
- Registration office (Bürgeramt): nobody reports a wedding abroad for you. Have your marital status updated with the certificate.19
- Tax office: after a wedding abroad, your tax class doesn’t change automatically. Send the certificate with your application.20 The options for couples: tax classes in Germany.
- German record (Nachbeurkundung): optional, and possible if at least one of you is German. It gets you a German marriage certificate that needs no translation later.17,18
- Name: a German’s surname does not change through the marriage alone. A married name in German documents needs a name declaration at a German registry office.17,21

For Germans living in the US
You can apply for the German record of your marriage through a German consulate, which forwards the application, or send it directly to the German registry office with signatures notarized by a US notary. The responsible office is the one at the last German address of either spouse. If neither of you ever lived in Germany, it is Standesamt I in Berlin. The application form includes the name declaration.17
Fees as of October 2026, according to the German missions in the US: at the embassy or consulate, €85 for notarizing the signatures and up to €33 for certified copies. The registry office then charges its own fees, which each German state sets — as a guideline, €80 for the entry, €45 more if foreign law applies, and €12 for the certificate. The missions warn that Standesamt I in Berlin takes at least three years.17
The spouse visa for a partner from outside the EU
The marriage is the basis of the spouse residence permit, but where your partner applies depends on their nationality.
US citizens can enter Germany without a visa and apply for the residence permit there, within 90 days of entry. The same applies to citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the UK.22
Partners of other nationalities generally need the national visa for family reunion, applied for at a German embassy or consulate before moving — even if they can visit Germany without a visa. A spouse permit normally requires entry with that visa.23 Germany does let people apply from inside the country if their right to the permit arose after entry. But that right arises with the wedding, and Germany’s Federal Administrative Court has held that the last entry into Germany is what counts.24 A couple who marries in Las Vegas and then flies to Germany married before that entry — so the exception does not help.

Married in another US state
The same logic applies everywhere in the US. Germany looks at the rules of the state where you married, and the apostille comes from that state — not from the state where you live, and not from a German mission. The German missions list the authority for each state; usually it is the Secretary of State.13 First order the certified copy from the office that recorded your marriage, then send it to that state’s apostille office.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, as long as the ceremony followed Nevada rules and each of you was free to marry under the law of your home country — for example, neither of you was still married to someone else. Germany has no recognition procedure. Each authority accepts the certified marriage certificate, usually with an apostille and often with a German translation.
As of October 2026, the Clark County marriage license costs $102, plus a card fee of 2% and $1.25. A civil ceremony at the county’s Office of Civil Marriages costs $75 plus a $2.75 card fee; chapels set their own prices. Each certified copy of the marriage certificate costs $20, and the Nevada apostille another $20.
From the Nevada Secretary of State, not from the County Clerk or a German consulate. First order a certified copy of the marriage certificate from the Clark County Clerk. Then send the original certified copy with the order form, naming Germany as the destination, to the office in Carson City or drop it off at the Las Vegas office. The fee is $20, with optional rush service from $75.
Entering it in the German marriage register is optional and only possible if at least one of you is German. What you should do if you live in Germany is show the certificate to the registration office and the tax office, because your tax class doesn’t change automatically after a wedding abroad.
Not if you take part from Germany. In 2024, Germany’s Federal Court of Justice decided that a couple who married by video call before an office in Utah while both were in Germany had not validly married, even with a US certificate and an apostille. A wedding in Germany has to take place before a German registrar.
Yes. US citizens can enter Germany without a visa and apply for the spouse residence permit at the local immigration office within 90 days of entry. Partners of most other non-EU nationalities who marry in the US have to apply for the national family reunion visa at a German embassy or consulate before moving.
